Philosophy of Gifted Education
The mission of gifted education is to systematically and purposefully identify and nurture students with exceptional abilities. Through both whole-class and pull-out programs, we aim to provide these students with appropriate educational opportunities, enabling them to fully realize their individual potential within a flexible teaching methodology and environment.
Implementation Model of Gifted Education in Hong Kong
The implementation model of gifted education in Hong Kong incorporates three key elements—higher-order thinking skills, creativity, and social skills—into the curriculum at both the first and second tiers.
a. The first tier refers to the use of teaching strategies within the general classroom to develop students' potential in areas such as creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
b. The second tier involves providing specialized or interdisciplinary pull-out programs within the school for students with higher abilities.
c. The third tier refers to offering specific training and learning opportunities outside of school for exceptionally gifted students.
Gifted Education at Our School |
IA. Whole-Class Curriculum Integration of Gifted Education Elements: Our general curriculum incorporates essential skills such as communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Additionally, the physical education program includes rugby, allowing students to experience this sport. |
IB. Differentiated Instruction in General Classrooms: In accordance with students' characteristics, our curriculum employs group teaching in both Chinese and English subjects, with classes divided into standard and Cantonese programs. The mathematics curriculum includes problem-solving workbooks to develop students' problem-solving abilities. The general studies curriculum features inquiry-based learning and project studies. Some classes utilize homogeneous or heterogeneous grouping and expert groups, with ongoing reviews to meet the developmental needs of students. |
IIC. Pull-Out Teaching Activities: We offer enrichment courses outside of the general classroom setting, such as creativity training and leadership development programs, including the "Sailing Leaders" training. |
IID. Advanced Training Within the School: Our school maintains a talent pool to identify gifted students and provide them with pull-out courses. In Chinese, we offer Mandarin GAPSK courses and recitation; in English, we have recitation, public speaking, English ambassadors, and poetry competitions. Mathematics includes abacus training and Olympiad classes, while general studies features scientific inquiry courses. Computer classes offer enrichment courses and opportunities in our campus television station. In the areas of visual arts, music, and physical education, we provide numerous specialized after-school training programs, including ink painting, creative arts, violin, piano, handbells, rhythm music, choir, African drumming, musical theater, brass band, sports activities, fencing, martial arts, jump rope, athletics, and swimming. For detailed descriptions of each program, please refer to the respective subject webpages. |
IIIE. External Support: The Education Bureau's Gifted Education Section and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education collaborate with universities and other educational organizations to provide challenging enrichment and extension learning opportunities for specially recommended gifted students. Each year, students can nominate themselves to join the Gifted Education Academy, where they can participate in specialized gifted programs. Additionally, exchange activities are organized in Singapore and various cities in mainland China (Beijing, Shanghai, Fujian, Qingdao). |
