Introduction to Putonghua Teaching Strategies and Learning Activities

Our school’s Putonghua subject is committed to comprehensively enhancing students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading and pinyin through diversified teaching strategies and rich learning activities. At the same time, we actively cultivate students’ interest in learning Putonghua and encourage the spirit of self-directed learning, so as to achieve the teaching objectives of the subject.

Classroom Teaching Arrangements and Learning Support

  • Pre-lesson Preparation: Guide students to have initial exposure to the lesson content and establish a foundation in the language.
  • In-class Mini Activities: Introduce topics in an interesting way to enhance learning motivation.
  • Digital Learning Tools: Through educational software and QR codes, students can listen to and read aloud initials, finals and pinyin of words, effectively consolidating their phonetic knowledge.
  • Pinyin Reading and Practice: Integrate listening, speaking, reading and writing to strengthen students’ ability to apply phonetics and pinyin.

These teaching arrangements not only promote the improvement of students’ listening, speaking and pinyin reading abilities, but also help cultivate their habits and skills in self-directed learning, laying a solid foundation for their future language development.

In addition, to further promote the use of Putonghua and create a positive language learning atmosphere, our school specially organises the “Putonghua Lunchtime Activity Week”. The activities are rich and diverse, including:

  • Putonghua Karaoke
  • Appreciation of xiangsheng and student performances
  • Teachers’ storytelling
  • Tongue twister challenges
  • Pinyin electronic games

Through relaxed and enjoyable activities, students enhance their language skills through interaction and develop interest and confidence in Putonghua.

Putonghua Recitation Competition: Inheriting Culture and Enhancing Language Sense

To enhance students’ recitation skills and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture, our school organises the “Putonghua Classical Poetry and Modern Prose Recitation Competition” during the Lunar New Year period. Through reciting classic poems and prose, students not only practise pronunciation and intonation, but also gain a deeper appreciation of the emotions and artistic conception of the works, thereby improving their language literacy and cultural cultivation.

Post-Examination Activities to Promote Putonghua Learning

To consolidate students’ phonetic knowledge and further enhance their interest in learning Putonghua, our school’s Putonghua subject organises a series of interesting Putonghua activities during the post-examination period in June, including:

“Cantonese-Putonghua Guessing Game and Pinyin Competition”

Through translation games between Cantonese and Putonghua as well as competitive pinyin challenges, students master the phonetic differences in a relaxed and interactive setting. This enhances their language sensitivity, stimulates their motivation to learn pinyin, and consolidates their phonetic knowledge.

Reading Promotion: Yellow Bus Book Series

Our school also encourages students to borrow books from the Yellow Bus Book Series from the library. This series specially introduces Cantonese-Putonghua translation knowledge. The content is presented in a simple and easy-to-understand manner, making it suitable for students to broaden their language horizons and enhance their language comprehension abilities.

Children’s Songs and Singing Games: Language Enlightenment for Lower Primary Students

To cultivate lower primary students’ interest in Putonghua, the school actively promotes the “Children’s Songs and Singing Games” activity. Through catchy children’s songs with lively rhythms, students naturally acquire correct pronunciation and intonation in a joyful atmosphere, laying a solid foundation for language learning.

Our school is committed to creating a relaxed, pleasant and interesting learning environment both inside and outside the classroom. Through diversified activities and interactive teaching, we stimulate students’ interest in Putonghua. We hope that students will learn with joy and grow through exploration, thereby developing sustained motivation and a positive attitude towards learning Putonghua.
