Cantonese Opera

“Tok tok tok cheung, tok tok tok, tok tok tok cheung, cheung…… The show begins!”

“Galloping to the edge of the sky, we stand shoulder to shoulder……”

Our school’s Cantonese Opera Team was established in 2024. We conduct one lesson per week, using a game-based approach to teach students, enabling them to master the basic Cantonese opera skills of “singing, acting, reciting, and fighting” in a relaxed manner. We create original children’s Cantonese operas with themes based on children’s daily lives, making the performances close to the children’s world and allowing them to portray ancient children without the awkwardness of “acting like adults”.

Our school believes that through children’s Cantonese opera, students can not only master singing, recitation and body movements, but also learn Cantonese opera makeup, as well as how to wear headdresses and costumes. They can become young male leads (xiaosheng) and young female leads (xiaohuadan) of Lam Pat Chung, experiencing the joy of traditional performing arts.

Our school believes that Cantonese opera can help students develop language expression and teamwork skills. It can also convey moral messages from Chinese culture, such as “Filial piety is the foundation of all virtues” and “Unity is strength”. This enables our students at Lam Butt Chung to experience, identify with, and pass on traditional Chinese culture.
